Reshowing of the critically acclaimed classic

We hope you can join us for a showing of the classic film Casablanca, which is part of a series of film classics being shown at the Regal Melton.

The Plot

Set in Morocco during the Second World War. Casablanca tells the story of Rick Blaine (Bogart), owner of the bar Rick's Café American, and likes to keep himself out of trouble but becomes embroiled in drama when he meets his former lover Ilsa Lund (Bergman) in his bar and has to decide whether he is going to help her and her husband the Czech resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Henreid), escape the determined clutches of the Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser.

Will he decide to help her? Will he and Ilsa rekindle their lost love? You have to watch the film to find out.

Casablanca's enduring appeal

“This is a movie that has transcended the ordinary categories. It has outlived…leaped across time to win audiences who were born decades after it was made. Sooner or later, usually before they are 21, everyone sees "Casablanca." And then it becomes their favorite movie.”- Roger Ebert, April 5th 1992

Casablanca is one of its era's most critically acclaimed and successful films. It's won three Oscars, including Outstanding Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Humphrey Boggart and Best Director for Michael Curtiz.

It is a timeless film that has endured many changes both within society and the film industry since it was made. Yet it is still a beloved classic of many filmgoers across generations.

It has topped many a list of collections of greatest films, and 3rd in the American Film Institute's greatest American films of all time, and 33rd in Empire the popular film magazines list of global best films in history.

What is it that has given it such enduring appeal?

This could be attributed to the joy of watching the film as pure escapism. At the time, this was to help viewers escape the horrors of the Second World War, but the ability of the film to transport audiences to a different world is part of the reason it is so fondly embraced by many film fans today.

Whilst many films from this era were critically acclaimed, the personal connection that many film fans feel towards the film is due to the potent combination of this escapism and being able to identify and deeply sympathise with the well-crafted characters in the film.

After all, you may not have been to Morocco, but who hasn't felt the pain of a lost love, the poignant effect of a song you both shared together? It is these evocative moments within the film which have ensured it has stood the test of time.

This film is the perfect film to celebrate the re-opening of our cinema and we would love for you to join us. For more information on bookings visit This Page
