This speech featured in this project was given at Davos. To a shocked audience of the world's elite bankers and an enraptured media.

It is one of her most famous and one of the first that I listened to. I chose it not only because of my strong personal memories of it but because it demonstrates Thunberg's rhetorical skill. In this speech she achieves the perfect balance of emotional language and factual argument. She lays out the key information on the earth's rising temperatures but also frequently uses vivid and arresting imagery and powerful direct address to provoke the listener. Most notably “your house is on fire”, which combines both of these techniques to convey the urgency of the climate crisis in a way that caught the worlds attention.

I personally believe Thunberg is an extremely talented and effective rhetorician, and this speech demonstrates her ability to provoke and inspire through her use of language. The speech highlights the ultimatum we face as a society on climate change. We either act now on climate change or as she states we face the consequences of the 'unthinkable price tag' environmental damage because of our unwillingness to change. As previously, described a lot has been made about the extremity of some of Thunberg's language in this speech and others, particularly when combined with the supposed naivety that comes with her young age. Yet, if this had simply been a speech with only scientific facts and statistics would it have garnered the same level of media attention which is crucial for inspiring activists and pressuring world leaders to act on climate change?

I have aimed through this typographic project to pay tribute to Greta Thunberg's railing against the status quo through the use of colour and style of fonts which are inspired by punk and protest posters. The design choices were also inspired by hazard posters, as this speech is ultimately at its core a warning for those listening. I hope this project does the power of Thunberg's speech justice and you enjoy the experience of reading it on this website.
